Saturday 15th May: Paisley Abbey 10 am to 4 pm
Events will take place in and around the abbey; all are FREE.
A fascinating, fun-packed day for everyone, especially children. Taking place in and around the ancient abbey, there will be demonstrations, talks and hands-on activities covering a wide variety of aspects of medieval life. And to show that the ancient skills are still alive, Paisley’s well-known annual crafts fair will set up its marquee beside the abbey.
To delight, amaze and entertain visitors will be strolling minstrels, an alchemist, a calligrapher, a story-teller (and there are lots of wonderful tales to tell about nearly 900 years of abbey life) and talks on medieval medicines, Knights Templar, Wallace and Bruce.
Young children will have the opportunity to make masks, design a stained glass window, hunt for gargoyles or try their skills at calligraphy.
Re-enactors in medieval costume will set up camp with a fletcher (arrow-maker), women demonstrating tapestry, wool work and making children’s bracelets, a selection of children’s costumes and medieval games as well as a display of ancient weapons including a replica of Wallace’s sword. Children can try the games, tapestry making and be trained to be a soldier in the army of Wallace and Bruce.
