Museum Special Displays
Paisley Museum and Art Galleries will open a special exhibition on Friday, 14th May.
“Charters and Chamber Pots: Aspects of Mediaeval Paisley”
This year there will be Europe-wide celebrations for the 1100th anniversary of the establishment of the Abbey of Cluny in France. The Abbey was instrumental in the spread of Christianity and the development of monasticism in Europe in the Middle Ages and so Cluny became the acknowledged leader of a whole network of priories across the continent.
Paisley Abbey was founded as a Cluniac monastery in 1163. This exhibition aims to explore the wide-ranging influence of Paisley Abbey. It will feature mediaeval items from the collections including sculpted stones, carved woodwork, manuscripts and some of the material illustrating the daily life of the monks excavated from the Great Drain.
Some of the highlights of the exhibition will include the Papal bull of 1265, the Arbuthnott Missal, a French manuscript with exquisite illustrative pages and the Elderslie Cross which was last displayed in the Museum more than 25 years ago. Also featuring will be a triptych depicting the career of Sir William Wallace, the Balgonie Altarpiece and other artworks that feature views of the Abbey.
The displays will be in place throughout 2010.

Cette année là sera des célébrations au niveau européen pour le 1100ème anniversaire de la fondation de l’abbaye de Cluny en France. L’abbaye était instrumentale dans la diffusion du christianisme et le développement du monachisme en Europe pendant les Moyens Âges et ainsi Cluny est allé bien au chef reconnu d’un réseau entier des prieurés à travers le continent.
L’abbaye de Paisley a été fondée comme monastère de l’ordre clunisien en 1163. Cette exposition vise à explorer l’influence étendue de l’abbaye de Paisley. Elle comportera les articles médiévaux des collections comprenant les pierres sculptés, le boisage découpé, les manuscrits et une partie du matériel illustrant la vie quotidienne des moines excavés du grand égout.
Certains des clous de l’exposition incluront une bulle papale de 1265, l’Arbuthnott Missal, un manuscrit français avec les pages d’illustration exquises et la croix d’Elderslie qui a été pour la dernière fois montrée dans le musée plus de 25 ans. Comporter également sera un triptyque dépeignant la carrière du chevalier, William Wallace, le retable de Balgonie et d’autres dessins qui comportent des vues de l’abbaye.
